We have lost 97% of our wildflower meadows over the last century, which has had a devastating impact on wildlife. ‘Going Wild in BC‘, along with RSVP [Restore Shropshire Verges Project] is trying to create wildflower corridors to link-up insect-friendly habitats. Roadside verges have great potential to help. Many verges are cut too early in the year with the cuttings left to rot down, which removes the flowers for pollinators and destroys most finer grasses, leaving verges dominated by rank vegetation.
‘Going Wild in BC’ is looking for helpers to help with maintaining verges and other small plots of grass in and around Bishop’s Castle to encourage the growth and spread of wildflowers.
The tasks involved include: littler picking, raking and collecting cut grass, and growing-on/planting-out wildflowers. We would welcome whatever help you can give. Please let us know if you are able to join our team by contacting:- climateaction@lightfootenterprises.org
