Coppicing Trees

Why is coppicing good for wildlife?

Coppicing is an ancient woodland management technique where trees are cut down to near ground level and allowed to regrow. This cycle of cutting and regrowth creates a variety of light levels and habitats that benefit a wide range of wildlife.

  • More light reaches the woodland floor, encouraging wildflowers, butterflies and insects.
  • New growth provides shelter and food for birds, small mammals and pollinators.
  • A diverse woodland structure means different species can thrive, from shady mosses to sun-loving plants.

Going Wild in BC supports coppicing because it keeps woodlands rich in life. By reintroducing traditional practices, we are creating places where wildlife – and people – can flourish.
